Mini Dog Birthday Cake

What better way to celebrate your pup’s special day than with this Mini Dog Birthday Cake?! because every dog deserves their own special slice on their big day! Today, we’re celebrating a very special birthday at WildWash, and honestly… how do they grow up so fast?

INGREDIENTS:

If your dog loves flavours like pumpkin and peanut butter (and let’s be honest, most do!), this birthday cake will be an instant favourite. It’s very similar to a traditional cake, just made with dog-friendly ingredients and naturally lower in sugar.

YOU WILL NEED:

      •  120g plain flour

      •  1 tsp (5g) baking soda

      •  60ml coconut oil, melted

      •  1 egg

      •  110ml honey, preferably raw

      •  60g mashed pumpkin/

         butternut squash

(roast or steam until soft, then

        mash smooth)

      •  60ml applesauce

      •  64g peanut butter

      •  1 tsp (5ml) vanilla extract

For The Icing:

      •  150g plain Greek yogurt

      •  64g cup peanut butter

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP 1: Prepare your tins & oven.

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 4″ cake tins with a little coconut oil and set aside.

STEP 2: Mix the dry ingredients.
In a large bowl, stir together the flour and baking soda. Put this aside while you prep the wet ingredients.

STEP 3: Melt the oil.
Gently melt the coconut oil in a saucepan over low–medium heat.

STEP 4: Combine the wet ingredients.
While the oil melts, whisk together the egg, honey, butternut squash, applesauce, peanut butter, and vanilla in a large bowl.

Once smooth, stir in the melted coconut oil until fully combined.

STEP 5: Bring the batter together.
Fold the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined—no overmixing needed.

STEP 6: Bake the cakes.
Divide the batter evenly between the two pans. Tap them lightly on the counter to level the mixture.
Place both tins on a baking sheet and bake for 20–30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean or mostly clean.
(Every oven is a bit different—start checking at the 20-minute mark.)

STEP 7: Cool completely.
Let the cakes rest in their tins for 10 minutes. Then, loosen the edges with a knife, turn them out onto a cooling rack, and allow them to cool fully before assembling.

 *TIPS*

SUBSTITUTIONS:

      •  Flour: Plain flour works perfectly, but whole wheat can also be used. If your dog follows a grain-free diet, a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend may also work.

      •  Oil: Coconut oil is lovely, but canola oil is equally suitable and dog-approved.

      •  Yoghurt: The icing uses Greek yoghurt and peanut butter. If yoghurt isn’t right for your dog, peanut butter on its own can still make a great frosting.

MAKE THE ICING

Stir together:

      •  Greek yoghurt

      •  Peanut butter

Tip: Choose yoghurt with the lowest sugar content possible.

Double the icing quantities if you’d like to frost the whole cake rather than just the middle and top.

ASSEMBLY

      1.  Slice the domed tops off each cake layer to create flat surfaces.

      2.  Spread a little icing on the cut side of the first layer and stack the second layer on top.

      3.  Finish with icing on the top (and the sides if you’ve doubled the icing).

      4.  Add a sprinkle of cheese for an extra birthday surprise!

This easy homemade cake is a wonderful way to celebrate your dog’s special day—and we hope it brings lots of tail wags, happy licks, and unforgettable memories. If you make it, feel free to share a photo of your pup enjoying their birthday treat—we’d love to celebrate with you!
