Coat Care Guide for Senior Dogs – National Adopt a Senior Pet Month

Senior Dog Coat Care Guide (1)

When dogs age, very much like humans, their skin and coat will undergo changes. It is very important therefore to take special care of the grooming needs for our senior canines.

The coat will often become thinner and drier with age and can also tend to moult more.  Regular brushing is therefore really important to remove the loose hairs, brush out tangles and distribute oils through the coat.

For Short haired dogs, a rubber brush or mitt will do the job and also give the doggie a nice massage at the same time!

For long haired dogs, use a slicker brush gently and comb through afterward to check the coat is free from tangles.

For a video representation of How to Brush Your Long Haired Dog, check out our WildWash master groomer, Katie Rourke Dowding, showcasing these processes step-by-step:

Their skin too will become drier and more fragile.  We would recommend our Senior Shampoo from our PET Range which contains Ginseng to help boost circulation and increase collagen production and, Palmarosa which helps to balance sebum production and make the skin more supple.

For super sensitive coats or any doggies with skin conditions or allergies, we always recommend our PRO Sensitive Shampoo with Evening Primrose Oil and Aloe Vera.

You may notice that your dog’s natural odour becomes more pronounced with age but our gentle, natural shampoos can be used as often as wished to keep your senior dog clean and fresh smelling.

We recommend you pay particular attention to the older dogs’ ears and eyes.  Yucky ears can be gently cleaned with our WildWash Gentle Ear Cleanser and a daily wipe with our Daily Eye Cleanser will leave the eye area clean and refreshed.

It is a good idea too to keep an eye on their paw pads and their noses as again both can dry out with age!  WildWash Magic Paw Balm will help keep paws in good condition and protect from the elements and our WildWash Best Ever Nose Balm will keep those dry noses well lubricated!

As dogs age, they may also develop some arthritis or joint problems and this is always worth remembering when your dogs are being professional groomed.  Standing for long periods on a grooming table may be uncomfortable for them.  Do mention any problems to your groomer who can then arrange for them to be rested midway through a groom or as they get older, their ‘style cut’ can be modified to a simpler pet groom to make this quicker and therefore more comfortable for your dog.

TO SUMMARISE:

1. Gentle Brushing

2. Frequent Washing

3. Special attention to Ears, Eyes, Paws and Noses
