In this article, Katie Rourke Dowding, our WildWash master groomer will explain every step you need to take in order to brush a dog’s face.
Before starting, you must remember that the dog’s face has got a lot of very delicate structures. So, in this tutorial, we will carefully look at how to brush the dog’s ears, corner of the eyes, corner of the lips and the most sensitive part of his face, the nose.
So..let’s get it started:
1. Using a Slicker Brush start brushing gently all the fur from underneath the dog’s chin – don’t forget to always start from the bottom of whatever you’re working with!
2. Carefully get the brush into the dog’s muzzle – be VERY careful about the corner of the eye because you don’t want to hit your pooch’s eyeball.
TIPS: Use only the corner of the Slicker Brush when dealing with delicate parts of the dog’s face, including the part around the eye.
3. The next part that needs brushing is the top of the dog’s head.
4. It’s time for the ears now – be careful because the ears are very delicate.
Usually, most of the matting will appear behind the ears. This happens when the dog swings his ears and creates friction which therefore results in tangles.
So, brush out underneath the ears first, paying attention to the ends of the leather. Than, brush the bottom of the ear by holding the ear with your hand.
5. Using the wider side of the Double Sided Comb, lift up all the facial hair to check if there are any tangles left. Anywhere the comb doesn’t go through, you will have to go back and re-brush.
6. Finally, use the fine comb to make sure all his coat is silky.
Now that your dog is cleaned up of tangles, he should be more confident with his new look and shiny coat. If you want to see how to brush all his coat, read our blog article on How to Brush a Long Haired Dog.
