In this tutorial, our master groomer Katie Rourke Dowding explains how to brush a dog with short hair at home using only a Grooming Mitt, Rubber Brush and a Fine Comb.
Katie says that even though some people tend to think that short haired dogs don’t need any coat care at all – “Nothing really could be further from the truth”.
She explains that “each dog has got a number of hairs that we need to drop out every day, so it is important to pull all the unwanted hair out of the coat before they cause any itchy skin issue for the dog”.
Firstly, if your dog doesn’t really like to stay still to have his coat brushed, you can bring some treats and offer them to him every time he tries to escape. This way, your dog will learn that if he stays calm during this process, he will be rewarded and will naturally start enjoying it.
However, this process will start using a flexible Rubber Brush:
1. Start with massaging the dog with the Rubber Brush in order to loosen up all the unwanted hairs – make sure the motion is very brisk for the best results.
2. Put on your Grooming Mitt
3. Stroke your dog with it to pull all the hairs that have been loosened up after brushing him with the rubber brush
4. Lastly, use the Fine Comb to carefully take out all the unwanted fur from the dog’s coat. Once finished, you will observe that quite a lot of fur is coming out.
5. Wipe the fine comb of hairs and repeat this process until the comb appears to remain nice and clean.
